7 Things You Didn’t Know About 7-Eleven

  1. The convenience store concept began in 1927 at the Southland Ice Company in Dallas, Texas. An enterprising ice dock employee, who in addition to selling blocks of ice to refrigerate food, began offering customers milk, bread and eggs on Sundays and evenings, when grocery stores were closed.
  2. The Company’s first stores were known as Tote’m stores because customers “toted” away their purchases. Some stores even displayed genuine Alaskan totem poles out front. In 1946, Tote’m became 7-Eleven to reflect the stores’ new, extended hours – 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., seven days a week.
  3. 7-Eleven is the largest chain store in any category,  opening approximately six stores per day somewhere in the world.
  4. It’s first store opened in Feb 29, 1984 at the corner of Kamias Road and edsa Quezon City
  5. Originally, the company was called The Southland Corporation (of Dallas, Texas) and was founded in1927. It eventually changed it’s name to 7-Eleven Inc.
  6. Thanks to a broken soda fountain, slushy drinks called Slurpee were born.
  7. 7-Eleven operates 3,241 convenience stores in the Philippines as of June 30, 2022.
